Prevention of Motorcycle Theft and Fraud
Written by: Dan Keller | Current Trends

Many motorcycles cost $20,000 or more, making them a valuable target for thieves who either sell stolen cycles whole or strip them down in chop shop-like fashion for parts resale. Motorcycle parts, including frames, can be more easily altered, reused and camouflaged than car or truck parts.
In the United States, one motorcycle is stolen every 8.3 minutes. Approximately 25-30 percent of all motorcycles stolen are recovered. In comparison, 65-70 percent of motor vehicles stolen are recovered. The difference is that motorcycle thieves can change the appearance of and/or hide motorcycles more easily as compared to cars and trucks.

Shootings in Houses of Worship
Written by: Brad Keller | Church

Earlier this month, another tragic shooting occurred on the grounds of a church. A minister and deacon were shot at the Ninth Street Baptist Church in northern Kentucky when they arrived to attend a funeral. Rev. Donald Fairbanks died from the injuries he sustained.
CNN.com recently published an article about the utilization of armed security guards in houses of worship. They also posted an interesting (and humbling) interactive map of recent church shootings. Click here to link to the map. ...

$45,000 Stolen from California Church
Written by: Brad Keller | Church

Another eye-opening email about church burglaries was waiting in my Inbox this morning. This time the article that stood out the most involved a church in California that lost almost $45,000 in two separate burglaries. It seems that burglars broke into the church office during Sunday mass and stole a small donation box, but returned later that night through an exterior window to steal the entire church safe.
According to the article, the church was burglarized two years before when musical instruments and a PA system were stolen
It is another tragic example of thieves taking advantage of churches as soft targets. To read more about this story, ...

As a professional in the crime prevention industry, I often follow current crime prevention trends in an effort to keep current on certain topics. Thanks to the wonderful (and free) tool of Google Alerts, I receive daily emails that notify me of news activity pertaining to specific key words.
This morning I was particularly intrigued by three separate crime sprees involving church burglaries, vandalism, and arson....

Email Double Take
Written by: Brad Keller | Cyber

It does not happen very often, but every once in a while I find myself doing a double take at that strange email looming in my email Inbox. Did I recently ship something from UPS with an incorrect address? Why has the bank lost my account information? Do I even have a Discover card?
As my brain scans through the cobweb-covered files of my antiquated memory, I assess the authenticity of the email on my computer screen. It appears to be a legitimate request from the Commonwealth Credit Union Online Department. They have disabled my account because of three unsuccessful login attempts. It figures, I can never remember all of the passwords anymore.I just need to click here to start the update p...

Expensive locks didn't help me when my office was robbed a few weeks ago, in broad daylight. The thief who made off with the computers was identified and caught through the vigilance of someone in my building who noted a suspicious character lurking about.
This experience points to the importance of natural surveillance for crime prevention, one of the principles of CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design). C...

CHICAGO, Aug 10 (Reuters) - Tom Cunningham stands in the camera well near first base at U.S. Cellular Field, home of the Chicago White Sox, intently watching the action and making sure he views every batted ball and close play.
The 49-year-old Chicago police officer is not there as a fan -- although he does love baseball -- but as part of Major League Baseball's program to guarantee the authenticity of game-used jerseys, balls, bats and other memorabilia it sells to fans.
At the end of the White Sox game, Cunningham will assign each item...

Violent S. American Jewel Thieves May Be Hitting Smaller U.S. Cities
Written by: Bill C | Current Trends

By Kari Lydersen Washington Post Staff Writer
The FBI is investigating whether a violent, well-organized ring of South American jewelry thieves is expanding its operations away from large metropolitan areas such as New York, Miami, Houston and Chicago and hitting targets in smaller cities in the South.
In one incident in Little Rock, diamond merchant Faramarz Hakimian, 48, of New York had just pulled into the parking lot of an upscale strip mall July 29 when two masked men jumped out of a black Chevrolet behind him, smashed his car windows, pulled a gun and told him to lie down on the seat. The assailants took his keys and stole a satchel with half a million dollars' worth of jewelry from the ...
