Our Mission

Security Consulting Services

Campus Crime Prevention Programs (CCPP) and its associate organization, AEGIS Security Design (ASD) offer a broad range of security consulting services for colleges and universities. These services include security assessment of existing campus buildings and facilities, security design of new campus buildings and facilities, development of security design standards for campus capital construction projects and evaluation and design of electronic security systems.

The staff and associates of CCPP/ASD include Certified Protection Professionals (CPP), Physical Security Professionals (PSP), certified Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) specialists, campus law enforcement administrators, experienced security system designers and computer-aided design specialists. We have no affiliation with product manufacturers or security systems service providers.

Colleges and universities represent unique crime prevention and security challenges. They virtually all have a diverse array of buildings and facilities. Such buildings and facilities include classroom facilities, office buildings and facilities, student residence facilities, athletic facilities, libraries, research and technical facilities, parking facilities and often medical and patient treatment facilities. A college campus may be located in a downtown, inner-city area or on thousands of acres.

Security solutions for college campuses incorporate physical security measures (i.e. mechanical locking systems, glazing, security lighting, door and window features) as well as electronic security measures (electronic access control systems, intrusion detection systems, door security systems, emergency telephones and closed circuit television systems). Electronic security measures, in particular, are often highly complex and difficult to effectively design without considerable experience and expertise. In addition, AEGIS Security Design consultants are skilled in the design of campus buildings and facilities within the context of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), a series of benign design strategies which address security issues and concerns through the manipulation and management of space.

Security Assessment of Existing Campus Buildings

A security assessment of existing campus buildings and facilities includes an analysis of security risks, threats and vulnerabilities based upon particular circumstances associated with the facilities and their environment. This security assessment involves interviews, index and/or benchmark studies, site inspections and a review of security systems and crime prevention programs. The work effort assists in defining the security objectives and the level of security to be applied. Mechanical, electronic, environmental and procedural security issues are evaluated during the conduct of the security assessment or survey. The resulting deliverable is a report of findings and recommendations with a formula for determining implementation priorities.

Security Design of New Campus Buildings

The most efficient and cost effective time to implement appropriate environmental, physical and electronic security measures is during the design stage of new campus buildings and facilities. During the life use of these facilities, there will never be a better opportunity to implement effective security measures.

This service intends to influence the safety and security of new campus buildings and facilities by establishing security objectives to be reflected in the architect's design. It ensures the most effective and least costly application of security strategies and identifies budget requirements for security related equipment and systems. Our involvement in the design process begins with initial program development and continues through schematic design and design development. Often, it also includes the development of construction documents and management of the security systems installation process.

Development of Security Design Standards

Every college and university should have a formal set of comprehensive security design standards or guidelines for campus capital construction projects. Without such standards, new building security design features are often considered on an ad hoc basis and are frequently given a relatively low priority.

In the absence of adopted security design standards, security concerns are often considered as late as the final stages of design development. The later security issues are considered, the fewer the options and alternatives.

AEGIS Security Design has worked with numerous colleges and universities in the development of capital construction security design standards. These standards ensure the college or university's security-related desires are detailed in writing and clearly communicated to the design team (architects and planners) during the program design. The security design standards are subsequently considered much like the "building code of the campus." They become the guide for physical, electronic and environmental security for each new campus building or facility.

Design of Electronic Security Systems

Most college and university campuses currently utilize electronic access control systems, intrusion detection systems, door security or alarm systems, emergency telephone systems and closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems. New threats and risks may evolve, however, and new security technology previously unavailable may have the potential to mitigate these vulnerabilities. Experienced AEGIS Security Design consultants and engineers can evaluate existing electronic security systems and develop a program for improvement and upgrade.

In addition to identifying recommendations for electronic security systems improvement, ASD consultants can provide program estimates and design services that lead to upgraded and enhanced security systems.
