On-Site Training
The American Crime Prevention Institute (ACPI) frequently contracts with law enforcement agencies to provide on-site crime prevention training for their personnel. This allows cost-effective crime prevention training to be provided without the expense of travel and lodging. Particularly when there are a number of personnel to receive crime prevention training, on-site classes can be the best choice for a department.
ACPI offers a wide variety of on-site crime prevention trainings. These courses include the following:
Fundamental Crime Prevention Skills for Law Enforcement Officers
Although this on-site training can be tailored or modified to address the unique training needs of a law enforcement agency, it is usually a one or two-day training program that covers fundamental crime prevention skills and strategies for uniformed officers. This is not designed as a complete crime prevention training seminar but instead, a training course that will provide uniformed officers with beneficial crime prevention knowledge and information.
Topics to be included in this one or two-day on-site training program usually consist of the following:

Basic Crime Prevention Certification Seminar
The American Crime Prevention Institute annually conducts two-week, open-enrollment Basic Crime Prevention Certification Seminars in Louisville, Kentucky. This is a comprehensive crime prevention training program that includes topics and material necessary to qualify seminar participants as Certified Crime Prevention Specialists.
The Basic Crime Prevention Certification Seminar can also be provided as a contract or co-sponsored on-site training. This can be financially feasible for a law enforcement agency when it has 10 or more personnel to be trained. Law enforcement agencies that host the on-site Basic Crime Prevention Certification Seminar often invite representatives from other nearby departments to also attend the seminar, in order to offset the cost of the training.
The curriculum for on-site Basic Crime Prevention Certification Seminars mirrors that of the open-enrollment seminar. The curriculum can be modified, however, to meet the unique training needs of the sponsoring agency.
For further information about a contract or co-sponsored, on-site Basic Crime Prevention Certification Seminar, contact William Carcara at (502) 379-8558.
Basic Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) Seminar
Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is based on the principle that "the proper design and effective use of the built environment can lead to a reduction in the fear and incidence of crime, and an improvement in the quality of life." The CPTED concept employs design strategies, citizen participation and law enforcement involvement to reduce both the fear of crime and the incidence of crime.
In communities throughout the United States, law enforcement agencies have become increasingly involved in the implementation of local CPTED codes and ordinances. Although CPTED should not be the sole responsibility of the police, law enforcement officers involved in crime prevention and community policing programs need a solid foundation of knowledge related to CPTED planning and execution.
Together with architects, local planners, developers and elected officials, law enforcement agencies should endeavor to employ CPTED strategies to better protect residential environments and developments, public housing, schools, parks and recreation developments, as well as commercial and manufacturing facilities.
The American Crime Prevention Institute has developed a 5-day Basic CPTED Certification Seminar. This seminar can be provided as contract or co-sponsored on-site training. Participants who complete this comprehensive Basic CPTED Certification Seminar will be certified by the American Crime Prevention Institute as Certified CPTED Specialists.
ACPI is pleased to have Mr. Timothy D. Crowe as our lead Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) instructor and trainer. Tim Crowe is widely recognized as the nation's foremost authority on CPTED. He is the author of the extensively-used text, Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design. Mr. Crowe has trained over 6,000 professionals in CPTED and provided CPTED training for hundreds of law enforcement agencies and communities.
Law enforcement agencies that sponsor on-site basic CPTED training often invite community planners, architects, leaders and elected officials to also participate in the training program. This can be an excellent means of fostering local CPTED understanding and cooperation.
