Seminar Description
The Basic Crime Prevention Certification Seminar is a comprehensive two-week training program for crime prevention officers and specialists. The curriculum for this seminar includes topics necessary to qualify seminar participants as Certified Crime Prevention Specialists.

Who Should Attend
The Basic Crime Prevention Certification Seminar is intended for both crime prevention officers and specialists. Personnel who successfully complete this program will be certified by the American Crime Prevention Institute and will be able to effectively carry out and complete comprehensive crime prevention responsibilities.

Seminar Details
Individuals who attend and successfully complete this two-week training program will be certified by the American Crime Prevention Institute (ACPI) as a Crime Prevention Specialist. In addition to being certified by the American Crime Prevention Institute, we will be happy to provide the course curriculum, lesson plans, instructor vitas and handout material as documentation for your state certification agency upon request. Upon successful completion of the program, seminar participants will receive the following:

What is Basic Crime Prevention Certification Seminar
Crime prevention, “the anticipation, recognition and appraisal of a crime risk and the initiation of some action to remove or reduce it”, should be a priority for every law enforcement agency. The principles and skills associated with crime prevention have never been more important then they are today.

Every public law enforcement agency should have specially trained crime prevention specialists who possess detailed knowledge of contemporary crime prevention techniques and strategies.

With budget limitations and economic realities, crime prevention has assumed a dimension of importance never before experienced.

The Need for Specialized Crime Prevention Training

To be effective, crime prevention officers or specialists need to possess a wide range of technical skills and programmatic knowledge seldom provided in traditional law enforcement training. They require crime prevention training specific to the areas of knowledge they will need to be proficient in to serve as capable crime prevention specialists. In such areas as locks and locking systems, electronic access control, CCTV surveillance systems, intrusion detection systems, security assessments, etc., crime prevention officers and specialists should serve as the primary information resource for their respective departments.

Course Logistics
All of the classroom training sessions for the Basic Crime Prevention Certification Seminar will be held at the Galt House Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky. The Galt House Hotel is located in downtown Louisville near the banks of the Ohio River. Room rates for the Galt House Hotel are $90.00 for both single and double occupancy. Seminar participants should make their own reservations at the Galt House Hotel by calling 502-589-5200 at least three weeks prior to the seminar.

The cost of attending the 10-day Basic Crime Prevention Certification Seminar is $1,050.00. If more than one person from the same law enforcement agency attends the seminar, the cost for each participant for the two-week seminar is $950.00. This includes registration fee, extensive handout material, laser engraved certification plaque, and daily refreshment breaks. It does not include travel, lodging or other food expenses.

Course Instructors

Mr. Daniel P. Keller
Executive Director
American Crime Prevention Institute

Mr. Keller has been directly involved in the administration and coordination of crime prevention programs since 1971. Mr. Keller served as a featured lecturer for the National Crime Prevention Institute and has lectured at over 300 crime prevention training seminars throughout the nation.

Dan Keller served as the Director of Public Safety for the University of Louisville from 1971 to 1997. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, the Southern Police Institute's Administrative Officer's Course, and the National Crime Prevention Institute.

In 1998, Mr. Keller founded the American Crime Prevention Institute (ACPI). In addition to serving as the Executive Director of ACPI, he also serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Aegis Security Design, an independent security consulting, engineering and design firm associated with the American Crime Prevention Institute.

Mr. James Elder, CPP
Senior Crime Prevention and Technical Specialist
American Crime Prevention Institute

Mr. Elder is an acknowledged national authority in the areas of physical and electronic security systems. He is a graduate of the Southern Police Institute's Administrative Officer's Course and the National Crime Prevention Institute. He is also a Certified Protection Professional (CPP).

Mr. Elder is a frequent crime prevention lecturer, as well as an active security consultant and engineer. He previously served as the physical and electronics security specialist for the National Crime Prevention Institute.

Mr. Arthur (Art) Hushen
National CPTED Authority

The American Crime Prevention Institute is pleased to have Mr. Art Hushen as our lead Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) instructor and trainer. Mr. Hushen is widely recognized as one of the nation’s foremost CPTED authorities.

Art Hushen retired from the Tampa, Florida Police Department where he was instrumental in the creation of the Department’s CPTED Unit and Tampa’s first CPTED Ordinance. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in criminology from the University of South Florida.

Art is a Director of the United States Designing Out Crime Association, Board Member of the International Society of Crime Prevention Practitioners, Past Chairman of the Florida Designing Out Crime Association, Past Board Member of the International CPTED Association and Past President of the Sun Coast Crime Prevention Association.
